Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev Arrives in Pakistan on Two-Day Visit to Boost Trade and Regional Connectivity

Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived in Islamabad on Thursday for a two-day official visit focused on expanding bilateral trade, strengthening political ties, and advancing Central Asia–South Asia regional connectivity.
The Uzbek leader was received at Noor Khan Airbase by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari, according to official statements.
In a message shared on the President Secretariat’s X account, the visit was described as a key step toward deepening Pakistan–Uzbekistan relations and enhancing regional economic integration.
Earlier, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said President Mirziyoyev is undertaking the visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and is leading a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers and senior business leaders. The Uzbek president is scheduled to meet President Zardari, hold delegation-level talks with the prime minister at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad, and address the Pakistan–Uzbekistan Business Forum.
The Foreign Office noted that this marks President Mirziyoyev’s second official visit to Pakistan, following his previous trip in 2022. The ministry said the visit reflects the upward trajectory in bilateral relations and the close ties between the two countries, rooted in shared history and mutual aspirations for peace and prosperity in Central and South Asia.
Pakistan and Uzbekistan have significantly expanded economic cooperation in recent years. A $1 billion bilateral trade agreement was signed in 2023, while both sides last month agreed to raise trade volume to $2 billion during talks held in Tashkent. Discussions on industrial cooperation, transport corridors, and regional connectivity projects are also expected to feature prominently.
Why it matters now: With Pakistan and Uzbekistan pushing ambitious trade and connectivity targets, the visit is expected to translate political engagement into concrete economic and regional outcomes.
