An Iranian naval warship was sunk in the Indian Ocean on Wednesday after being struck by a United States submarine, marking one of the most dramatic naval escalations in the ongoing conflict between Iran and U.S.-aligned forces.
The vessel, IRIS Dena, went down approximately 40 nautical miles south of Galle, according to Sri Lankan authorities and international media reports.
Rescue operations conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy recovered dozens of survivors from the water while hospital officials in Galle reported receiving the bodies of many crew members. Initial reports indicate that more than 80 sailors were killed, while about 30 were rescued.
U.S. defense officials confirmed the attack, stating that an American submarine fired a torpedo that struck the Iranian frigate in international waters.
The strike represents the first time since World War II that a U.S. submarine has sunk an enemy warship using a torpedo, highlighting the rapid escalation of naval operations during the current conflict.
IRIS Dena had recently taken part in an international naval exercise hosted by India before beginning its return journey to Iran.
