A 20-year-old U.S. Marine has been arrested in Okinawa on suspicion of robbing and killing a 39-year-old Japanese woman at a hotel in Naha, Japanese police said.

The suspect was identified as Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, who is stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa. Police allege that Ballard killed Anna Yagi, 39, at a hotel in Naha on October 3 and took her wallet and backpack. Ballard has denied the allegations.

According to Japanese police information reported by the Associated Press, security-camera footage showed a man believed to be Ballard entering the hotel with Yagi and later leaving alone. Police said Yagi was found dead in her hotel room.

Police also said Yagi appeared to have been strangled. Because the investigation is ongoing, the reported cause and circumstances of her death remain subject to the Japanese authorities' investigation.

Ballard was arrested by Japanese police on suspicion of robbery and murder and remains in Japanese custody, according to Reuters and the U.S. Marine Corps.

The case has prompted a strong response from the Japanese government. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi formally protested to the United States and called for maximum cooperation with the investigation, stricter discipline for U.S. military personnel and measures to prevent similar incidents.

Japan's Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi also expressed strong concern over the incident, while the U.S. Embassy and Marine Corps offered condolences and said they were cooperating with Japanese authorities.

The Marine Corps said Ballard is assigned to the III Marine Expeditionary Force and remains in Japanese custody. The service said it takes the allegations seriously and expects its personnel to meet high standards of conduct.

The incident has renewed attention on longstanding concerns surrounding the presence of U.S. military personnel in Okinawa, where a large concentration of American military forces is based.

The investigation is continuing. Ballard has not been convicted, and the allegations against him remain subject to the Japanese legal process.
