The family of an American doctor infected with Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been admitted to a high-security isolation ward in Berlin, as international health authorities intensify monitoring efforts surrounding a deadly outbreak that has already claimed more than 130 lives.
Germany’s health ministry confirmed Thursday that the wife and four children of the infected US citizen were transported to Germany aboard a special medical flight and are being treated as “close contacts” due to potential exposure to the virus.
Officials did not disclose whether any family members have tested positive for Ebola or shown symptoms.
The patient was identified by the Serge Christian mission organization as Dr. Peter Stafford, a medical missionary who contracted the virus while treating patients in the DRC, where a rare strain of Ebola is spreading.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Stafford remains in stable condition while receiving treatment at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, one of Europe’s most advanced infectious disease centers.
The White House said Berlin was selected for treatment because Germany’s proximity to central Africa allowed a faster medical evacuation than transporting the patient directly to the United States. The administration also denied reports suggesting it resisted Stafford’s return to the US.
Health experts are closely watching the outbreak in the DRC amid fears that rare Ebola variants could complicate containment efforts in vulnerable regions with strained healthcare infrastructure.
