TIRANA – Albanian prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation after videos allegedly showing the assault of underage girls circulated widely on social media, triggering public outrage and intensifying concerns over youth violence, child safety, and the growing misuse of online platforms.

The Fier Prosecution Office confirmed that investigators are examining allegations of "unlawful deprivation of liberty", a serious criminal offence under Albanian law, while also determining whether additional charges should be filed as the investigation progresses.

Authorities have not released the identities of the minors involved, citing legal protections for children and the ongoing criminal inquiry.

Videos Spark National Concern

The videos, which quickly spread across social media, prompted widespread condemnation from the public, child protection advocates, and education professionals.

Officials have urged the public not to share or repost the footage, warning that circulating videos involving minors can further traumatize victims, violate their privacy, and potentially interfere with the criminal investigation.

Law enforcement agencies are working to authenticate the videos, identify everyone involved, and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigation Focuses on Serious Allegations

According to prosecutors, investigators are reviewing digital evidence, witness testimony, and other material to determine whether the victims were unlawfully restrained or prevented from leaving during the incident.

Additional criminal offences may be considered depending on the evidence collected.

Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and that no final legal conclusions should be drawn until the judicial process is completed.

Child Protection in the Spotlight

The case has renewed debate over violence involving minors and the role social media can play in amplifying harmful behaviour.

Child rights organizations have repeatedly warned that recording and sharing violent incidents involving children can inflict long-term psychological harm while encouraging similar acts among young people seeking online attention.

Education specialists have also called for stronger safeguarding measures in schools, increased parental awareness, and improved digital literacy to help prevent future incidents.

Protecting Victims Remains the Priority

Officials reiterated that the identities of all minors connected to the investigation will remain confidential in accordance with Albanian law and international child protection standards.

Support services are expected to be made available to the victims as authorities continue their investigation.

Anyone with relevant information has been encouraged to cooperate directly with investigators rather than distributing the videos online.

Why It Matters

The case has become more than a criminal investigation. It has raised broader concerns about youth violence, online exploitation, cyberbullying, and the responsibility of society to protect children from both physical harm and digital abuse. The outcome of the investigation could influence future discussions on child protection policies, responsible social media use, and legal accountability in Albania.
