United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to visit Pakistan from October 6 to 8, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Office.

The Foreign Office said the visit will highlight Pakistan’s longstanding cooperation with the United Nations and its efforts to promote multilateralism, international peace and security, disaster preparedness and early-warning systems.

The visit is taking place at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar.

During his stay, Guterres is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, according to the Foreign Office.

The UN secretary-general is also scheduled to visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) and receive a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The Foreign Office said the visit will provide an opportunity for discussions on regional and international developments and Pakistan’s cooperation with the United Nations.

The visit comes after Guterres met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on September 25 on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. According to Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s Office, the two discussed regional and international developments, including the situation in the Middle East.

Separately, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Guterres would discuss Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediatory role in efforts involving the United States and Iran, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan. This is separate from the Foreign Office’s publicly stated description of the visit’s broader agenda.

Guterres previously visited Pakistan in 2022, following the country’s devastating monsoon floods.

His current term as UN secretary-general is scheduled to conclude at the end of 2026.

The October visit will therefore bring the UN chief to Islamabad for discussions covering Pakistan-UN cooperation, regional and international developments, peace and security, and disaster preparedness.
