ISLAMABAD: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday for a three-day official visit to Pakistan, with regional and international developments, multilateralism, peace and security, and disaster preparedness among the key areas on the agenda.

The Foreign Office (FO) said Guterres is visiting Pakistan from October 6 to 8 at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir received the UN secretary-general upon his arrival.

During the visit, Guterres is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, according to the Foreign Office.

The UN chief will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) and attend a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen multilateralism, international peace and security, disaster preparedness and early-warning systems will be highlighted during the visit. The discussions will also cover regional and international developments.

The United Nations said Guterres will visit the NDMA to see progress in Pakistan’s disaster preparedness and resilience following the devastating floods of 2022.

Guterres last visited Pakistan in 2022, when he travelled to areas affected by the country’s catastrophic floods. His current visit marks his return to Pakistan for high-level discussions with the country’s political and security leadership.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also met Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York last month, where they discussed major regional and international developments, including the situation in the Middle East.

Why It Matters: Guterres’s visit provides an opportunity for Pakistan and the United Nations to discuss regional developments, international peace and security, and Pakistan’s cooperation with the UN, while also highlighting the country’s disaster-preparedness efforts.
