The Untold Story of PAF Valor: Sabres, Mirages, and Martyrdom on 10 December 1971

On 10 December 1971, as the Indo-Pakistan War neared its decisive climax, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) showcased some of the most extraordinary acts of courage in its history.

Flt Lt Taloot Mirza, TJ, flying in tight formation with his leader, launched a precise attack on advancing enemy armour when six Indian Air Force Su-7s dove in to engage. Outnumbered three to one, the pair entered a fierce low-level dogfight. With nerves of steel, Flt Lt Taloot outmaneuvered a Su-7 and destroyed it with a decisive burst from his six 0.5-calibre Browning guns, while his leader shot down another—forcing the remaining aircraft to retreat.

Meanwhile, PAF Mirages of No. 5 Squadron struck Pathankot Air Base with pinpoint accuracy, bombing the technical area and destroying two IAF Hunters moments before takeoff, leaving the enemy stunned. Across the front, No. 33 Wing maintained an extraordinary pace of 50–60 missions per day, with Sabres attacking Akhnur and triggering a massive fuel-dump explosion that crippled enemy movement.

On this same fateful day, Sqn Ldr Aslam Chaudhry Shaheed, SJ led a two-ship close-support mission in the Chamb–Jaurian sector. His first attack run devastated enemy armour, but soon six IAF Hunters pounced. Without hesitation, he jettisoned fuel tanks, turned to engage, and brought down the Hunter leader in flames. Vastly outnumbered yet unyielding, he fought to the end and embraced martyrdom in the battle he refused to abandon.

The warriors of 10 December 1971 stood firm against overwhelming odds, their courage carving a legacy forever etched in the history of the Pakistan Air Force. Their heroism continues to inspire generations, shaping the indomitable spirit of the PAF.
