A fresh attack on a commercial oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz has heightened concerns over international energy security, as crude oil prices continue climbing amid escalating tensions across the Middle East.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on Friday that a tanker was struck by two explosive devices attached to a small boat while travelling through the strategic waterway. The incident occurred approximately 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman.

The explosions caused a fire in the vessel's engine room, temporarily disabling the tanker. However, the crew were reported safe, the fire was extinguished and the vessel continued towards its next port of call. Responsibility for the attack had not been established at the time of reporting.

The incident comes as international oil markets face mounting uncertainty. According to Reuters, Brent crude futures reached $116.59 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed to $103.45 during Friday's trading.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important shipping corridors, connecting major Gulf energy producers with international markets. Disruptions in this narrow passage can affect oil shipments, shipping insurance, transportation costs and global supply chains.

For energy-importing economies across Europe, Asia and Africa, prolonged instability could create additional economic pressure. Higher oil prices can increase fuel expenses, raise manufacturing costs and contribute to inflation, eventually affecting businesses and consumers.

The latest attack demonstrates how security incidents in a single maritime corridor can have consequences far beyond the Middle East. With diplomatic efforts uncertain and shipping risks elevated, international markets are facing another test of energy security.

Why It Matters: The Strait of Hormuz is not simply a regional shipping route. Its stability affects global energy supplies, international trade and the cost of living in countries thousands of kilometres away.
