Suriname Mass Stabbing: Nine People Killed, Including Five Children, in Paramaribo Attack
PARAMARIBO, Suriname — A shocking mass stabbing in Suriname left nine people dead overnight, including five children, police confirmed Sunday. The horrifying Paramaribo stabbing incident unfolded in and around a home in the Hadji Iding Soemitaweg neighbourhood.
According to local police, the suspect, believed to be suffering from mental health issues, was wounded and arrested at the scene. Officers were forced to fire at the man after he reportedly attacked them with a sharp object.
Deadly Family Attack in Suriname
Local media reports say the attack began after the man had an argument with his wife over the phone. He then tragically stabbed his 11‑year‑old daughter 44 times in the kitchen of their house before killing others.
Police released a statement saying:
“A man killed four adults and five children with a sharp object at a residence in Hadji Iding Soemitaweg. A sixth child and an adult were seriously injured and taken to the hospital.”
Suspect Shot and Hospitalized
Officers who responded to the Suriname stabbing scene had to open fire when the suspect turned on police with a knife, the statement added. The man was shot in the leg and is currently hospitalized under police guard. Authorities have not yet released his identity.
Community Reacts to Tragic Attack
Neighbours in the Commewijne district — where the attack took place — told local press that the suspect had been struggling with mental health challenges.
The tragedy has shocked the nation, especially as four of the victims were the attacker’s own children.
President Honors Victims of Paramaribo Stabbing
Suriname’s President Jennifer Geerlings‑Simons addressed the nation following the killings. In a Facebook statement, she expressed deep sorrow over the “unimaginably difficult time” faced by families affected by the tragedy.
“At a time when family and friends should stand together and support one another, we are faced with the harsh reality that there is another side to the world,” she wrote. “A father who takes the lives of his own children and, in the process, kills his neighbours as well. I wish all those in mourning much strength, courage, and comfort.”
Ongoing Investigation
Police say they are continuing investigations into the Paramaribo mass stabbing to determine the full circumstances of the attack.
