Shadab Khan Stars in All-Round Show as Sydney Thunder Fall Short Against Hobart Hurricanes in BBL 2025

In a thrilling Big Bash League (BBL 2025) match at Ninja Stadium, Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan put on a standout performance for Sydney Thunder, but it wasn’t enough to stop the defending champions Hobart Hurricanes from securing a dramatic four-wicket win with just one ball to spare.

Shadab Khan Shines With Bat for Thunder

Chasing 181, the Hurricanes managed to reach the target in 19.5 overs, while Thunder posted 180/6 after being sent in to bat.

Making his BBL debut for Sydney Thunder after moving from Hurricanes, Shadab impressed with the bat, scoring a brisk 34 off 24 balls, including two fours and a six. His innings included a spectacular six off Riley Meredith in the 19th over, sending a near-yorker soaring over deep point.

Shadab’s partnership with Bancroft provided crucial runs in the middle overs, giving Thunder a competitive total. However, his dismissal in the final over, caught by Nikhil Chaudhary off Nathan Ellis, capped Thunder at 180.

All-Round Impact With the Ball

Shadab also made an impact with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 36 runs in four overs during Hurricanes’ chase.

He struck first in the 13th over, dismissing Ben McDermott (38 off 24) with a well-disguised googly that hit the top of off stump.

Two overs later, he trapped Rehan Ahmed with a miscued loft, caught by Bancroft at long-on.

These wickets reduced Hurricanes to 151/5, keeping the chase competitive as the required run rate climbed.

Thrilling Finish

The Hurricanes’ innings started explosively with Mitchell Owen (32 off 14) in a 48-run opening stand. Nikhil Chaudhary (41 off 31) anchored the middle overs, while Thunder’s spinners, including Tanveer Sangha (1-26) and Chris Green (1-33), kept the pressure on.

Despite Shadab’s double strike, Hurricanes stayed on track, with McDermott hitting 38 (three sixes) and late contributions from Matthew Wade (25 off 16) and Chris Jordan (16 not out).

The match came down to a tense final over bowled by Daniel Sams, featuring a no-ball and dot balls, before Nathan Ellis smashed the winning run past the stumps in the 19.5th over, sparking celebrations for Hobart Hurricanes.
