Seven terrorists were killed during an intelligence-based operation in the Eidak area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan district on Friday, according to security sources cited by state media.
Radio Pakistan reported that security forces conducted the operation against militants identified by authorities as members of Fitna al-Khawarij and destroyed their hideouts. The term is used by Pakistani authorities when referring to militants associated with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
President Asif Ali Zardari praised the security forces following the operation, saying their efforts under the Azm-e-Istehkam initiative were aimed at eliminating terrorism and establishing lasting peace.
The operation comes amid continued counterterrorism activity across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Security forces have reported several intelligence-based operations in the province in recent weeks, including an operation in Mir Ali on September 30 in which three terrorists were reported killed.
The latest operation also follows a series of militant attacks in the province. A suicide bombing at a police checkpost in Dera Ismail Khan’s Darazinda tehsil last month killed 12 people and injured 35 others, according to earlier reports.
On September 18, an attack at the old Police Lines in Kohat killed 23 people and injured around 100, while eight terrorists were reported killed during a subsequent overnight clearance operation.
Security authorities continue to conduct intelligence-based operations across areas affected by militant activity. Casualty figures from individual operations are based on official security and state-media reports and may be subject to further verification.
