Saudi Arabia Bars Use of Its Airspace for Military Action Against Iran, Underscores Strategic Defence Ties With Pakistan

Saudi Arabia has firmly ruled out allowing its airspace or territory to be used for any military action against Iran, with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman reiterating the Kingdom’s commitment to de-escalation and regional stability amid heightened Middle East tensions.
The position was conveyed during a telephone conversation on Tuesday between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to Saudi state media. The crown prince emphasized respect for sovereignty, non-interference, and peaceful resolution of disputes, stressing that Riyadh will not be drawn into regional conflict.
Saudi officials indicated that the restriction applies to all foreign powers, signaling a deliberate policy choice to insulate the Kingdom from escalating military scenarios as tensions persist around Iran’s security posture and broader geopolitical rivalries.
At the same time, Saudi Arabia continues to maintain a robust defence posture through longstanding strategic partnerships — most notably with Pakistan, one of the Kingdom’s closest military allies. Saudi Arabia and Pakistan share decades of cooperation in defence training, joint military exercises, intelligence coordination, and advisory roles, forming a key pillar of Riyadh’s security architecture.
Pakistan’s status as the only Muslim-majority nuclear-armed state adds an important strategic dimension to this partnership, according to regional security analysts, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s deterrence framework while allowing it to pursue diplomacy without projecting military escalation.
Iran responded positively to the outreach, with President Pezeshkian stating that Tehran supports any diplomatic process that prevents war and reduces instability in the region.
Saudi Arabia’s position aligns with a broader Gulf trend, following a similar decision by the United Arab Emirates to deny use of its airspace for military operations against Iran — highlighting a collective regional effort to prioritise stability, economic security, and dialogue.
