A Russian artist known for satirising President Vladimir Putin was shot dead in eastern Poland, authorities said, in a killing that has triggered a major investigation and raised concerns about possible political motives.
The victim, known publicly as Semyon Skrepetsky, was identified by Polish prosecutors as 44-year-old Russian citizen Robert Kuzovkov. He was killed on Monday morning in Biala Podlaska, a city near Poland's border with Belarus.
According to investigators, an unidentified gunman armed with a handgun shot the artist multiple times. Officials said the attacker allegedly approached the victim after he had fallen and fired additional shots at close range before fleeing the scene.
Polish authorities have detained two Belarusian nationals in connection with the case near the Belarusian consulate in Biala Podlaska. Prosecutors stressed that no charges have been filed against the detainees and that the search for the suspected shooter remains ongoing.
A special investigative team has been established to examine the circumstances surrounding the killing. Polish government spokesman Adam Szlapka described the case as serious and revealed that authorities had previously offered protection to the artist, which he declined.
Local media reported that Kuzovkov's family has since been moved to a secure location as a precaution while the investigation continues.
The incident risks adding further strain to already tense relations between Poland and Russia. Poland's National Security Bureau said that if political motives are confirmed, the killing could represent another example of hostile actions extending beyond Russia's borders.
Officials have not announced a motive, and investigators continue to examine all possible scenarios.
