PTI’s Gohar Confirms Nomination Papers Submitted, Achakzai Expected as NA Opposition Leader on Thursday
Islamabad, Pakistan – PTI Chairperson Barrister Gohar Ali Khan confirmed on Tuesday that Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai is expected to be notified as the National Assembly (NA) opposition leader on Thursday.
Gohar’s statement follows NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq’s renewed process for appointing the opposition leader, a position that has remained vacant for nearly five months since the disqualification of PTI’s Omar Ayub in August 2025.
Speaking to Geo News at Parliament, Barrister Gohar said that Achakzai’s nomination papers have been submitted, adding that PTI had only one nominee for the post. “Our only nominee for the opposition leader slot is Achakzai, and his documents have been submitted,” he said.
The nomination of Achakzai was originally proposed by incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan in August 2025, nearly two weeks after the Election Commission of Pakistan disqualified Omar Ayub over cases linked to the May 9, 2023, riots.
The opposition has repeatedly criticized the government for delaying Achakzai’s appointment, while NA Speaker Sadiq had previously maintained that the matter was “sub judice,” referring to Ayub’s appeal against his disqualification. Ayub had filed petitions in the Supreme Court and high courts, which he later withdrew.
With Achakzai’s expected notification, the opposition in the National Assembly is set to regain its leadership, filling a key political vacuum that has lasted for months.
