PMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Northern Pakistan as Flood and Landslide Risks Rise | ChatZyr

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for northern and upper parts of the country, warning of flash flooding, urban flooding, strong windstorms and possible landslides as an active monsoon system moves into the region over the weekend.
According to the PMD, moist currents from the Arabian Sea are strengthening across northern Pakistan, while a westerly weather system is expected to enter the upper regions on Saturday evening, increasing the likelihood of widespread rain and thunderstorms.
Areas Expected to Receive Heavy Rain
Heavy rainfall is forecast from Friday night through Monday across Azad Jammu and Kashmir, including Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, Bagh, Kotli and Mirpur.
Rain and thunderstorms are also expected across much of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday and Sunday, including Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Mardan, Nowshera, Kohat, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan.
The weather system is expected to affect Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Jhelum, Attock, Chakwal and several other districts of Punjab.
Rain is also forecast for Gilgit-Baltistan, including Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Diamer, Ghizer, Astore, Ghanche and Shigar from Saturday night until Monday.
Meanwhile, isolated showers are expected in parts of Balochistan, including Zhob, Sherani, Kohlu, Barkhan, Dera Bugti and Khuzdar.
Sindh to Remain Hot and Humid
Most districts of Sindh are expected to remain hot and humid, although isolated rain is possible in Tharparkar, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Larkana, Dadu and Jacobabad on Sunday and Monday.
PMD Issues Safety Advisory
The PMD warned that strong winds and lightning may damage weak structures, including solar panels, electricity poles, trees and roadside billboards.
The department also warned of:
- Possible landslides in mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.
- Increased water flow in rivers, streams and hill torrents, particularly in northern regions and Dera Ghazi Khan.
- Localized urban flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad during periods of heavy rainfall.
Tourists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas, while farmers are urged to plan agricultural activities according to the weather and protect livestock.
The PMD added that the prevailing hot and humid weather is expected to ease as the rain-bearing system moves across northern Pakistan.
