A powerful earthquake that struck the southern Philippines has left at least 41 people dead, more than 450 injured and thousands displaced, forcing hospitals to move medical services outdoors while rescue teams struggle to reach isolated communities.

The magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao on Monday, causing widespread destruction, damaging critical infrastructure and triggering tsunami warnings. Disaster management agencies said only four people remain missing as search and rescue efforts continue.

In one of the disaster’s most dramatic scenes, doctors near General Santos treated patients in emergency tents under intense heat after concerns over structural damage made hospital buildings unsafe. Medical staff also assisted a mother in delivering her baby inside a makeshift outdoor ward while aftershocks continued to rattle the area.

The worst damage was reported in Sarangani Province, where collapsed roads and a destroyed bridge have cut off several communities from ground access. Authorities estimate some remote areas could remain isolated for at least a week, with helicopters being used to transport supplies and emergency personnel.

During a briefing on Tuesday, regional civil defence chief Rodrigo Sosmena said ongoing aftershocks remain a major obstacle for rescuers.

“Rescuers are being extremely cautious because aftershocks continue to threaten damaged structures,” he said.

Hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded since the initial quake, raising fears of further damage and complicating efforts to restore essential services.

Authorities are continuing damage assessments, distributing emergency aid and working to reconnect affected communities as thousands of residents remain in temporary shelters.
