Pakistan Presses for UN Reforms as Global Authority Faces Growing Strain

Pakistan has intensified its push at the United Nations for strengthening the primacy of international law and accelerating long-delayed reforms of the UN Security Council, warning that selective adherence to treaties is weakening the institution at a time of escalating global conflict.

Speaking at UN engagements, Pakistani officials cautioned that parallel diplomatic tracks and unilateral actions outside established multilateral frameworks risk eroding the UN’s central role in maintaining international peace and security. Islamabad stressed that bypassing collective decision-making mechanisms undermines global trust and weakens the rules-based international order.

Pakistan reiterated that the existing structure of the Security Council no longer reflects contemporary geopolitical realities, limiting its credibility and effectiveness in responding to crises in Gaza, Ukraine, Africa, and other conflict-affected regions. The country called for reforms that enhance representation, transparency, and inclusivity, particularly for developing nations.

Highlighting the importance of consistent implementation of UN resolutions, Pakistan warned that selective compliance fuels instability and emboldens violations of international law. Officials emphasized that equal application of the UN Charter is essential to prevent conflicts and protect smaller states from power-driven diplomacy.

Reaffirming its commitment to multilateralism, Pakistan urged member states to restore confidence in the UN by strengthening its authority as the primary forum for conflict resolution, global cooperation, and collective action on security and humanitarian challenges.

The renewed call comes amid growing international debate over Security Council reform, as pressure mounts to adapt the UN system to evolving global power dynamics.
