President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday began a four-day official visit to the United Arab Emirates, as Pakistan moves to deepen diplomatic engagement and expand cooperation in trade, economic development, and people-to-people ties, the Foreign Office said.

The visit, scheduled from January 26 to January 29, includes a high-level delegation and will feature formal meetings with the UAE’s top leadership to review the full spectrum of bilateral relations.

According to the Foreign Office, discussions will focus on trade, economic collaboration, and labour and diaspora linkages, while also covering regional and international issues of mutual concern. The talks are expected to reaffirm both countries’ commitment to strengthening strategic coordination amid evolving regional dynamics.

President Zardari’s trip follows a recent visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Pakistan in December, during which both sides held substantive talks on advancing long-standing bilateral ties. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Sheikh Mohamed also met in Rahim Yar Khan on December 30, reviewing cooperation across multiple sectors.

Earlier this month, Pakistan and the UAE agreed to move toward a formal pre-immigration clearance agreement for Pakistani nationals travelling to the Gulf state, a step officials say will facilitate mobility and ease travel procedures.

Why it matters now

The visit comes as Pakistan seeks to attract foreign investment, strengthen Gulf partnerships, and stabilise economic cooperation with key regional allies.
