ISLAMABAD: A stage play portraying the life and cultural legacy of renowned Sufi poet Amir Khusro captivated audiences at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) in Islamabad, earning a standing ovation at the end of the performance.

Presented by Dolphin Communication on Monday, October 5, the production was written by playwright Arshad Chahal and directed by Asma Butt. The cast received strong applause for their acting, dialogue delivery and overall presentation, according to reports from Dawn and The Express Tribune.

The production explored Amir Khusro’s contribution to the literary, spiritual and musical heritage of the subcontinent. An earlier Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) report said the play was designed to highlight his poetry, music, intellectual thought and cultural influence.

Speaking about the production, Asma Butt described Amir Khusro as a major Sufi, poet and figure in the musical heritage of the region. She highlighted his association with Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and his contributions to Persian and Hindavi poetry.

His mystical poetry has remained closely associated with the Qawwali and musical traditions of the subcontinent.

Butt said her interest in bringing Khusro’s story to the stage deepened after she visited the shrine of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya during a visit to India, where she was presenting her play Shah Hussain Madholal. She said hearing Khusro’s mystical poetry strengthened her determination to present his life and artistic legacy through theatre.

She described the production as a collective effort and said introducing historical and cultural figures to younger generations was a responsibility she valued.

The production continues Butt’s theatrical focus on historical and literary figures. Previous productions associated with her work have included stories connected with Shah Hussain, Madho Lal, Dulla Bhatti and Heer Waris Shah.

Why It Matters: The production offers audiences a contemporary theatrical interpretation of Amir Khusro’s literary and musical legacy while bringing a major figure from the subcontinent’s cultural history to a modern stage.
