ISLAMABAD: Pakistan formally offered on Tuesday to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran, as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar told the Senate that Islamabad stands ready to host negotiations amid rapidly rising regional tensions.

“Pakistan is ready to facilitate dialogue between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad,” Dar said while addressing the upper house of Parliament.

He disclosed that earlier rounds of diplomacy had shown positive momentum, with Oman and Islamabad both discussed as potential venues. Dar referenced his recent engagement with Omani counterparts and said the last round of talks had concluded constructively before military escalation disrupted progress.

The foreign minister credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir for playing what he described as an active diplomatic role aimed at de-escalation.

Dar reiterated Pakistan’s position that peaceful nuclear energy remains a legitimate right under international law, while emphasizing that dialogue and monitored arrangements remain preferable to confrontation.

He also confirmed that 792 Pakistani nationals have been repatriated from Iran so far, out of approximately 35,000 currently in the country, with most returning via the Taftan border.

During the debate, Senator Ali Zafar questioned the legality of recent military actions under the United Nations framework, while Senator Sherry Rehman urged restraint and responsible statecraft.

Why it matters now: As US-Iran tensions intensify, Pakistan’s mediation offer positions Islamabad as a potential diplomatic intermediary, seeking to prevent wider regional instability and economic fallout.
