Only M-Tag Vehicles Allowed into Islamabad from January 1, 2026

From January 1, 2026, authorities will allow only M-Tag–enabled vehicles to enter Islamabad, marking a major step toward digitized traffic management and improved urban regulation in the federal capital.

The decision aims to streamline vehicle entry, reduce congestion, and enhance security by ensuring that all incoming vehicles are digitally registered and traceable. M-Tag, an electronic toll and vehicle identification system, allows automatic monitoring through scanners installed at entry and exit points.

According to officials, the move will help curb illegal or unregistered vehicle movement, improve traffic flow at Islamabad’s entry points, and support data-driven planning for transport and security. It is also expected to reduce manual checks, saving time for commuters and law enforcement agencies alike.

Vehicle owners who do not have M-Tags will be required to install them before entering the city. Authorities have urged the public to complete registration well in advance to avoid inconvenience once enforcement begins. Special facilitation centers and online registration options are expected to be expanded ahead of the deadline.

While some commuters have raised concerns about implementation and access—particularly for visitors from other cities—officials maintain that the policy will bring long-term benefits by making Islamabad’s traffic system more efficient, secure, and modern.
