Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is set to visit Washington on Monday for high-level talks aimed at strengthening strategic ties with the United States, with major oil and gas agreements expected to be signed to boost energy cooperation, investment and economic growth.

According to Iraqi government spokesperson Haider al-Aboudi, the two countries are expected to sign several memorandums of understanding that will encourage greater participation by US energy companies in Iraq. The agreements are intended to increase Iraq's oil production capacity, modernize its energy sector and support long-term economic development.

A key focus of the visit will be Iraq's plan to develop alternative oil and gas export routes, reducing its dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. Officials say diversifying export channels is essential to protecting the country's energy sector from future regional disruptions.

Iraq has experienced declining oil revenues following disruptions to energy exports during the recent US-Iran conflict, underscoring the need for stronger international partnerships and more resilient export infrastructure.

Beyond energy cooperation, discussions in Washington are expected to cover defence and regional security. Iraqi officials have said strengthening the country's armed forces and expanding security cooperation with the United States will be among the priorities during the visit.

Relations between Baghdad and Washington have often been influenced by the presence of US troops in Iraq, Baghdad's relationship with neighbouring Iran and US concerns over the influence of armed groups. After being nominated as prime minister in April, Ali al-Zaidi received congratulations from US President Donald Trump, who expressed hope for closer cooperation between the two countries.

Why it matters: The visit could mark an important step in expanding US-Iraq economic and security cooperation while helping Iraq strengthen its energy sector, diversify export routes and attract new foreign investment amid ongoing regional uncertainty.
