India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and separate student and activist groups staged protests on October 2, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial voter-roll revision.

The CJP held a demonstration in Mumbai, while student and activist groups gathered in New Delhi. Reuters reported that authorities detained some protesters and closed several metro stations in Delhi as security measures were imposed around the demonstrations.

The dispute centres on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a nationwide voter-verification exercise. The commission says the process is intended to identify duplicate, deceased and otherwise ineligible voters and improve the accuracy of electoral rolls.

Opposition parties and protest groups allege that the revision has resulted in eligible voters being excluded and could affect electoral participation. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of political manipulation and maintains that its actions are lawful.

The controversy intensified after The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally raised objections at least 14 times over a 10-month period concerning decisions involving voter registration, electoral-roll revisions and election-related digital systems.

The internal disagreements have added to scrutiny of the commission as the SIR process continues. A petition challenging aspects of the Election Commission’s functioning and the SIR has also reached India’s Supreme Court.

The CJP emerged earlier this year from youth protests connected to unemployment and examination-paper leaks. The group has since expanded its activities, joining the wider political dispute over the voter-verification process.

The protests are expected to remain a focus of political debate as opposition parties and youth groups continue demanding greater transparency from the Election Commission.
