Former British minister and Reform UK politician Ann Widdecombe has died after being found with serious injuries at her home in southwest England, prompting a murder investigation and the arrest of a 26-year-old man, according to British police.
Police said officers responded to the property shortly after midday on Thursday, where the 78-year-old was discovered. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A suspect was later arrested in Newton Abbot, approximately 15 kilometres from the property.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said investigators have found no evidence at this stage to suggest the killing was linked to terrorism or had a political motive. Forensic examinations and witness interviews remain ongoing.
Widdecombe served as a junior minister under former Prime Minister John Major and later became one of Britain's best-known conservative political figures. Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute to Widdecombe's years of public service. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described her as an important figure in the Brexit movement, while former Prime Minister Boris Johnson praised her determination and public speaking ability.
The investigation comes after the high-profile murders of MPs Jo Cox in 2016 and David Amess in 2021, incidents that prompted renewed debate about the safety of public officials in Britain.
