Fans Vandalise Indian Stadium After Lionel Messi’s Abrupt Exit Sparks Chaos

Chaos broke out at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata after football superstar Lionel Messi made an early exit from the venue during his much-hyped India tour, triggering anger among thousands of fans who had gathered to catch a glimpse of the global icon.

The 38-year-old Argentina captain and Inter Miami star, currently on a three-day visit to India as part of his widely publicised “GOAT Tour”, arrived in West Bengal on Saturday morning to an overwhelming reception. Fans chanting Messi’s name flooded the streets, wearing Argentina jerseys and waving national flags.

However, excitement quickly turned into frustration when heavy security arrangements and poor crowd management prevented most spectators from seeing Messi up close. Although Messi briefly walked around the pitch waving to fans, he left the stadium earlier than expected, reportedly without playing the anticipated exhibition match.

Enraged fans — many of whom had paid over ₹5,000 ($55–$100+) for tickets — broke barricades, stormed the pitch, vandalised banners and tents, ripped out stadium seats, and threw water bottles onto the track. Videos of the stadium vandalism quickly went viral on social media, sparking debates around event mismanagement, security lapses, and fan safety.

“For me, watching Messi is a dream, but due to mismanagement I couldn’t even get a glimpse,” said businessman Nabin Chatterjee, speaking to AFP.

Before the unrest, Messi unveiled a 21-metre (70-foot) statue of himself holding the FIFA World Cup, one of the highlights of his visit to Kolkata.

Another fan, Ajay Shah, told PTI that people had spent “a month’s salary” to attend the event.

“I came to watch Messi, not politicians. Even police personnel were taking selfies. The organisers are responsible,” he said.

Following the incident, West Bengal Police arrested the event’s chief organiser, while assuring that normalcy had been restored. Authorities are now exploring ticket refunds for disappointed fans.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a public apology, calling the incident “disturbing” and ordering a formal probe into the mismanagement.

“I sincerely apologise to Lionel Messi and all his fans for the unfortunate incident,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) clarified that it had no role in organising the private event and that no official clearance had been sought.

Despite the chaos, Lionel Messi’s India tour will continue, with scheduled visits to Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, including a possible meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Messi recently won his second consecutive MLS MVP award after leading Inter Miami to the league title and will captain Argentina in their World Cup title defence later this year.
