KARACHI: A young doctor was gunned down in a late-night targeted attack near Mehran Hotel, police said Tuesday, in a chilling incident that highlights rising threats to healthcare professionals in Pakistan.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza confirmed that Dr Sarang Memon was traveling with his wife along Stadium Road when armed assailants intercepted their rickshaw near Dr Dawood Pota Road. The attackers, arriving in a car, opened fire before fleeing.
Dr Memon suffered four gunshot wounds and was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre at around 11:30pm. Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed stated he died within 20 minutes during treatment, with a critical chest injury proving fatal.
DIG Raza said initial findings indicate the attack was not robbery-related but linked to “personal enmity.” The Crime Scene Unit has collected evidence, while CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being analyzed.
Dr Memon, associated with a private hospital in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, belonged to Badin district. His family has previously faced tragedy, with one brother drowning in the Indus River and another killed in a separate shooting incident.
The incident adds to a growing pattern of violence against medical professionals nationwide. Earlier this month, urologist Dr Asif Malik was injured in a shooting in Peshawar, while recent killings in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have triggered protests within the healthcare community.
