Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi Recalled to Pakistan Squad for Australia T20I Series
Lahore, January 23, 2026 — Star batter Babar Azam and fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi have been recalled to Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming T20 International series against Australia, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Friday.
The squad was finalised during a selection meeting at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, chaired by senior PCB officials and national selectors. A PCB selection committee member said the decision to bring back Babar and Shaheen was taken to restore experience, leadership, and balance ahead of a demanding away series.
Babar Azam, widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s premier white-ball batters, returns after being rested during recent assignments, while Shaheen Afridi’s inclusion follows medical clearance and workload assessment, signalling his readiness to spearhead the pace attack against Australia’s strong batting lineup.
Selectors have opted for a blend of senior players and emerging talent, using the series as both a competitive assignment and a testing ground for future combinations in the shortest format. The tour is also expected to play a role in shaping Pakistan’s long-term T20 strategy.
The Pakistan vs Australia T20I series will be played in Australia later this month, with match venues and dates to be confirmed by Cricket Australia and the PCB.
Why it matters now: The return of Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi strengthens Pakistan’s core ahead of a high-intensity tour, reinforcing stability and leadership as the team prepares for major international tournaments.
