Artificial intelligence is reshaping the global workplace, but public concern is growing over what the technology could mean for jobs, careers and future opportunities.

A September 2026 survey by Pew Research Center found that people in 34 of 37 countries surveyed tended to expect artificial intelligence to lead to fewer jobs rather than more over the next 20 years.

The research surveyed 42,151 adults across 36 countries, with US results drawn from separate surveys. Pakistan was among the countries included in the international research.

The findings measure public expectations, not confirmed job losses or a forecast that every industry will shrink.

Young Workers Face a Changing Job Market

A June 2026 report by the World Economic Forum found that more than one in three young workers globally are employed in occupations with medium-to-high exposure to AI-driven changes in job tasks.

Exposure does not automatically mean unemployment. AI may automate certain responsibilities, change existing roles and create demand for different capabilities. The effects will vary across industries and occupations.

Skills Could Shape the Future

A joint report published by the International Labour Organization and partner institutions in August 2026 highlighted the growing importance of AI literacy, digital skills, critical thinking, adaptability and social skills.

For students and professionals, learning to use AI tools responsibly while strengthening practical expertise could help them respond to changing workplace demands. Employers, educators and policymakers will also need to consider how training and career pathways can keep pace with technological change.

Why It Matters Now

For Pakistan and the wider world, the debate goes beyond whether AI will replace particular tasks. It raises questions about access to training, entry-level opportunities and how workers can benefit from new technology without being left behind.

AI's long-term employment impact remains uncertain. What is clear is that preparing people for a changing workplace will be an important challenge for governments, businesses and educational institutions.
